Information on Otaki - Wellington
The rural service town of Otaki is situated near the north bank of the Otaki River. The area is historically significant for Maori – there are several marae in and around Otaki, as well as a Maori college. Close proximity to the walkways of the Tararua Range is Otaki’s main attraction. At Otaki Forks you’ll find picnic, swimming and camping areas. Hiking tracks range from 30 minute strolls to multi-day expeditions (there are several hikers’ huts in the ranges). Otaki Beach is wide and windswept – a great place for an invigorating run or walk. Functional facts: Approx. population 5600, information centre, good range of shops and services, train station.
